STEP 1 – The Akismet Plugin

If you choose to host your website on WordPress.com for your, Akismet is already installed, you just need to sign up for an API key, which you can get for free.

Then this will automatically be protecting you against spam.

 

You can click the Dashboard tab in the WordPress Dashboard to view Akismet stats. Go to yourWebsite.wordpress.com/wp-admin or your own hosted WordPress site if that’s the way you have gone.

You then need to click on the Plugins tab on the left side.

Simply select the Akismet Plugin.

STEP 2 – Your Spam Stats.

This will show you how many spam comments have been detected and stopped from reaching you by the software. The more popular your blog or website becomes, the more spam will show up here. It is estimated that Akismet stops 7.5 million pieces of spam worldwide every hour.

Click on the stats icon for results.

From here a new tab or browser window will open and show you your statistics.

This is a new site for training purposes, so there are no stats, but yours will show up here.

STEP 3 – Do Your Part To Fight Spam

Akismet is always learning, spammers are always coming up with new methods, so if you come across a some of spam that Akismet misses, you mark it as spam, this will help Akismet learn and not miss similar spam in the future. To mark an individual comment as spam is very simple, just hover over it and press the Spam button.

 

 

STEP 4 – Reporting Multiple Comments.

If you have multiple comments, you want to mark as spam, just check the boxes next to the comments, select the Mark as Spam option from the bulk drop down menu option at the top of the screen and press the Apply button.
