How To Register a Domain Name With GoDaddy.com
In this post i’m going to show you how to register a domain through GoDaddy.com who’s arguably one of the largest domain registrar’s out there, so what we’re gonna do is just going to go through the process from start to finish of registering a domain name.
So for this example, as far as choosing a good domain goes you want to make sure your domain clearly states to the people visiting your website what they can expect to find there or alternatively you can go with the branding angle like Facebook and YouTube has gone.
YouTube still kind of relate to what people are going to find on the website, as “The Tube”, slang for television, from the term cathode ray tube.
eBay, Amazon and Twitter are also unique brands as well, so basically what you need to do is decide what you want to do with your domain, it really depends on the purpose of your domain and without getting into too much of the technicalities here i’m going to jump in and show you how to register a good domain.
So if this is your first domain name I would always recommend trying to get your own name or something close to it. For example my name was taken, I couldn’t get colinbell.com so I knew I was going to set up a blog so I went for ColinBellBlog.com or you could follow your name with online or something like what your blog is going to be about if it’s a blog like YourNameChef.com or YourNameGardening.com. I think you get the idea.
The reason to get your name even if you don’t intend to set up a blog is well it’s your name for one and in the future you may want to set up a blog or have more than one website, so it’s a good place to let people know about what you’re doing and your other websites or projects of you can simply use it to redirect or another website.
Now I’m going to do is select a domain name, I’m not going with my name as I already have this blog, so I’m going with a descriptive domain name.
Let’s say I have a video course on how to create digital information product without spending any money.
So let’s head over to GoDaddy.com so I can show you how to register a domain name (I’m in the UK so it has redirected me to their UK site automatically & prices will be in British Pounds) and the first thing you want to do is set up an account. Click the Sign In tab at the top Right of the page.
Then click on create my account.
Which will take you to a page to enter your details.
Simply fill out the form or log in with Facebook if you prefer. (I don’t)
Then once you account is created and you’re logged in (you may need to confirm your email address my clicking a link Godaddy send you) you can start searching for a domain name.
So my website so going to be selling a video course on digital product creation without spending any money.
The name I have come up with is ZeroCostProductCreation.com and I always try to get a .com if I can, if I can’t I may go with .net of .info depending on the site but alway .com if its availiable. You could go with country website if your visitors are coming from or you are only targeting people from your country, for example in the UK website end in .co.uk, in Australia they end in .au, Canada .ca etc, but I tend to stick with .com.
If your desired domain name is available click on the select button, if not keep trying until you find a name you like.
Make sure none of the extras you don’t want or need are automatically selected and click Continue to Cart.
Select if you would like Privacy Protection. If you’re setting up a blog or website that has your name, picture and contact details on it then you really don’t need this.
Make sure all your selections a correct and continue.
Now select how long you would like to register your domain name for, I’m going for two years as they have an offer on at the moment, just 99 pence if you register for at least two years.
When you’re happy with your options click Proceed to Checkout.
Here you will need to select a payment option, I have gone with PayPal.
And click Place Your Order.
Again make sure everything is correct and click the button again.
That’s it, if your payment has gone through okay you will get a confirmation.
To access your domain settings click on your name at the top right hand side or the page.
Then click on manage my domains.
There you have it, that’s how to register a domain name through Godaddy.com you have just registered your domain.
